New Staind

STAIND guitarist Mike Mushok has posed the following message on the group's official web site:

"I know it's been sometime but we've been busy finishing up the record and guess what? It's done! We're all really psyched on it also, it's by far the best thing we've ever done. I think that anyone whose ever been a fan will really enjoy these tunes. I find myself listening to it all the time and am really proud of all the songs. I know we all can't wait for everyone to be able to hear it.

"We don't have a positive release date yet, we just finished mixing it last week and go to master it next week. We have a photo shoot coming up this week and are in the discussions regarding the artwork. I know I'm really looking foreword to getting back out on the road and playing these songs live — I can't wait! It's really a record where I don't think we'd have any problem playing all the songs on it."

System Confirm

SYSTEM OF A DOWN has confirmed that Disc One ("Mezmerize") from the band's 2-disc set, "Mezmerize/Hypnotize", will be released on May 17, 2005. Disc Two ("Hypnotize") is expected to see a late fall release.

SYSTEM OF A DOWN wrote some thirty tracks for "Mezmerize/Hypnotize" and recorded them at producer Rick Rubin's Laurel Canyon studio between June and November of 2004. The album was produced by Rubin and Daron Malakian and mixed by Andy Wallace, who also mixed "Toxicity" and "Steal This Album!" The new songs are more complex, more progressive, more unorthodox, and more experimental than ever, while retaining the idiosyncratic, ironic and schizophrenic qualities that make SYSTEM OF A DOWN so distinctive. Topics include relationships, the evils of television and corporate mind control, the mysteries of life and death, and a surreal experience at a celebrity baseball game. Some of the song titles are "Radio Video", "Old School Hollywood", "Cigaro", "Lost in Hollywood", "Question", "Vicinity of Obscenity" and "Revenga". The decision to release the two discs six months apart was made simply to give fans time to get into and really live with the music from Disc One before plunging into Disc Two.

"Mezmerize /Hypnotize" will be the follow-up to the nearly six-million-selling "Toxicity" which was released in September 2001 and debuted in the Number One position on the Billboard/Soundscan charts. "Toxicity" generated four Top 10 singles, including the #1 smash "Aerials", and was named "2001's Best Album of the Year" by Spin magazine. Entertainment Weekly named "Mezmerize/Hypnotize" the #1 (of 25) Most Anticipated Album.

Security?

The main issue I believe was security that night. There are always fucked up people at shows, just no one as fucked up as Nathan Gale. But, from what I understand no one was searched at all... And the owner says metal detectors are a deterrent? Yeah that’s right smart guy they are, but there was no type of deterrent at all that night, not even a half assed patted down.

In general, I am sure most of us can count how many times we were even patted down at a metal show. The other month I went to see Unearth at the Ottobar in Baltimore. Did anyone touch me? No I walked right in. It is like this in many other smaller clubs I have been to as well. I am sure we all have experianced this. They say this guy went out to his car and got a gun and forced his way in. This is true, but at the same time they said security could not do anything. From experience I know that a few things may be true in this situation. One being they were fuckin scared, and who wouldn’t be. Two they get paid around 7-MAYBE 9 an hour and figure its not worth trying to stop them. The third was that they should have gotten a hold of other security and tried to stop him. Sure they did not have weapons maybe but there are other things you can do. At least they called the police and prevented other people from getting hurt.

My point of this rant? Security will change at concerts you can believe that. I personally do not mind getting searched it takes a second. I’d rather have that then someone stab or shoot my ass. The other thing is, here we go again with the backlash against heavy music. There is always stabbings and shit at rap concerts but you don’t hear much about that due to the fact that it happens a lot. All this guy did was put a strain on the scene in general. I expect changes soon, and they may not be for the better. Again this is just my point of view, others may view things differently.

Little Could Have Been Done...

Mark S. Krzos of Southern Florida's The News-Press reports:

While PANTERA's local fans called Dimebag Darrell's death one of metal's greatest losses — perhaps the most significant death in the genre since OZZY OSBOURNE guitarist Randy Rhoads died in a plane crash in 1982 — some nightclub managers and owners maintain it's an isolated incident.

"There's almost nothing you can do to stop something like that," says Ricochet owner Keith Stengel. "The guy sounds like he was really sick."

Gaye Levine, the former manager of the Fort Myers rock club Neptunes, says the shooting that forced the closure of her club earlier this year also couldn't be stopped.

"All metal detectors are is a deterrent," she says. "On the night of our shooting, the man left the club, went out to his car, grabbed a gun and then came back, pointed it the guy at the front door and said, 'I'm goin’ in.' When you have a gun pointed at you, what else can you do?"

Doug Baker, major of operations for the Fort Myers Police Department, said in instances where intent to injure is so strong, there’s little anyone can do to stop them.

"Look at 9/11," he says. "If someone is so bent on committing a violent act — if their will is so strong, it'll be difficult for anyone to stop them. The only thing anyone can do is provide enough security to try and ensure the safety of their customers." Ricochet, which has since become the area's premier club venue for national touring acts, employs the use of metal detectors at some shows.

"We use it if we think there could be a problem," says Stengel, who also requires male patrons to have their shirts tucked in. "We do that so we can see if they're carrying anything." Stengel also says four bouncers guard the stage for every concert, no matter what type of musical genre. Levine hopes that Wednesday's incident doesn’t become a battle cry against rock 'n' roll. "I can see it now ... People here are going to say, 'See, it's not just hip-hop,'" she says. "This is going to be a knee-jerk reaction to a single incident by a deranged person." Killer Made People Uncomfortable

The man suspected of fatally shooting DAMAGEPLAN guitarist Dimebag Darrell and three others during a concert in Columbus last night liked to hang out a tattoo parlor near his house and was a member of the local Eagles lodge, according to the Associated Press.

But no one at those places knew much about 25-year-old Nathan Gale (photo), who police say walked on stage at the Alrosa Villa nightclub and opened fire as the band DAMAGEPLAN began its set.

Lucas Bender manages the tattoo parlor across the street from Gale's Marysville apartment. He says Gale used to talk about music but that he never mentioned DAMAGEPLAN or its predecessor PANTERA. Bender says Gale sometimes made customers uncomfortable by staring at them and that he often hung around when he wasn't wanted.

Marysville police say Gale has been arrested for trespassing and driving with a suspended license but wasn't known as a troublemaker.

Dimebag Darrell, Four Others Killed In Shooting

Dimebag Darrell, guitarist for Damageplan and Pantera, was killed during a shooting spree at a Columbus, Ohio, nightclub Wednesday night. He was 38.

Darrell, real name Darrell Abbott, was among the five people killed during the incident. Also dead are the gunman, 25-year-old Nathan Gale of nearby Marysville, Ohio, and two fans, Nathan Bray, 23, and Erin Halk, 29, according to Columbus Police Department public information officer Sherry Mercurio. Gale also wounded two people.

Damageplan had just begun their first song in front of approximately 250 people at Alrosa Villa when the gunman jumped onstage, made a comment about Pantera, and began firing at close range into Darrell's body, shooting him several times before opening fire on the crowd.

A patrol officer nearby, James Niggemeyer, heard the call of shots fired at 10:18 p.m. and by 10:20 p.m. had snuck inside the club through a back door, according to public information officer Sergeant Brent Mull. After entering, Niggemeyer, who had no backup, confronted the gunman onstage, where he observed one victim and Gale holding a hostage by the neck.

"The officer was able to strategically gun this guy down before he was able to kill his hostage, and it appeared that he was about to kill his hostage," Mull said at a press conference Thursday (December 9). "The suspect had the hostage in a headlock situation and had his firearm out shooting, and it's believed he was about to take his gun to the hostage."

But the hostage wriggled out of the way slightly, Mull said, and the officer was able to kill the shooter with a single shotgun blast as the hostage escaped uninjured. One eyewitness told CNN that Gale reloaded his gun during the shooting spree. The Columbus Dispatch described the gunman as a tall, bald, heavyset man in a Columbus Blue Jackets jersey and jeans.

The fifth victim's name and those of the two wounded have not yet been released, but the club's manager told the Dispatch that one of the wounded was a security guard who had tried to wrestle the attacker's gun away.

"If the officer hadn't acted when he did and how he did, we'd probably be looking at more dead, because this guy was actively shooting," Mull said. Following the incident, police took more than 200 patrons onto three city-donated buses, where they were interviewed by some 60 police detectives.

"The ones that were inside and witnessed this ran for their lives and were in fear for their lives," Mull said. "They are victims too, and we want to take care of them."

One of the witnesses, his jeans torn and soaked with blood, told CNN he jumped onstage and attempted to give Darrell CPR before paramedics arrived.

Police have interviewed friends and relatives of the shooter, attempting to establish a motive for his actions. "We may never know the motive for this," Mull said, "unless he left a note somewhere else."

Searching Gale's residence is the next step of the investigation, as is analyzing amateur video footage taken of the incident, which homicide investigators are looking at now, Mull said. The venue had no surveillance footage. Mull also said he had been told there was no metal detector at the club, though he could not confirm that at press time and a club spokesperson could not be reached.

Bassist Mike Pilato recently left the group, and according to the band, "[it] is a very upsetting fact, but it's not grounds for a breakup." Machine Head 10 Years...

Last Night I was able to witness Machine Heads' 10 year Anniversery show in Philly. And it was a show to remember. They played the whole "Burn My Eyes" Album from front to back. We saw a few people with Cameras which maybe me think about a possible DVD in the works, but we shall see. Here is a review from the Machine Head forum I don't think I could write it any Better...

This show was unbelievable, i cannot express how lucky i felt to be there as a fan of 7 years to witness something so awesome. There are so many reasons why MH are so special to so many people, maybe it;s that fact that unlike most of their peers of ten years past, they can still deliver the same caliber performance they did when they first entered in the heavy metal scene, or maybe it's the honesty and sincerity the band has always had with their fans. Or probably the most obvious would have to be the great music they put out, either way "MH's the best, that's the point".

Their opening music was Realize, Real Eyes, Real Lies, which the band didn't play but it came through the PA. But then they did something i've only heard through many upon many bootlegs. They did they ol'school desire to fire intro into Davidian, needless to say the shit hit the fan. Some people got it, some people didn;t but that was okay, i guess you just had to be that kind of fan to understand. They ripped into Old, then of course into A thousand Lies which came out so awesome. None But My Own was a little off key, unfortunately one of Robbs strings wasn;t tuned correctly, you might see/hear that on the dvd. Oh yeah on that note i saw about 4 or 5 people shooting the set from all angles so if you pray hard we might get that dvd we've all been waiting for.

Back to the subject, NBMO came out great. Then one of my all time favs the Rage to Overcome, it was monstrous! McClain made the drums sound gigantic and i still can hear a whole bunch of people saying "holy shit" including myself. Following the order, Death Church was heavy beyond all hell we all know where that one went. The only time i;ve heard Nation on fire was when they played it during the TBR tour and they cut the heavy part out. It was really awesome to hear the full version. Blood for Blood was awesome, i should mention Phil did a lot of improvs on the solos which were definitely cool and Robb was on target with his.

I;m your god now was flawless and they did a few covers with Mark Hunter from Chimaira on stage including Creeping Death, Walk, Livewire and one more i think. Closed the set off with Block of course and shit you had to see all four of those dudes in a group hug on stage, very emotional for those dudes and I;m so happy for those guys.
Thank You Machine Head for an amazing night, you guys are amazing.

New Bjork Album Due August 31st

Elektra/Atlantic recording artist Bjork has unveiled details of her upcoming new album, dubbed Medulla. This will be her seventh solo studio work, and first since 2001's Vespertine. Release date is August 31st.

Produced and arranged by Bjork (with co-production on four tracks by her frequent associate, Mark Bell), Medulla represents another landmark recording for one of modern music's most ingenious and inventive artists. The album sees Bjork exploring the rich potential and remarkable range of the human voice. Much of the collection features the inimitable singer performing over percussive beats created by some of today's masters of human beatboxing, including Japan's Dokaka, the UK's Shlomo, and former Roots member, Rahzel.

In addition to its unique voice-based backdrops, the album will also feature Faith No More/Mr. Bungle frontman Mike Patton, Inuit throat singer Tagaq, classical singer/human trombonist Gregory Purnhagen (Philip Glass, Gavin Bryars), and two full choir groups: the Icelandic Choir and the London Choir. And finally, it will include the track "Submarine," a powerful Bjork-penned duet with legendary art-rock singer/songwriter Robert Wyatt.

New Entombed U.S. Release Date Set

Candlelight Records today confirms August 10 as the long-awaited release date for the new album from Sweden's Entombed. Inferno w/Averno is the eighth studio album from the three-time Scandinavian Grammy Award nominated five-piece.

Recorded at famed Atlantis Studios in Stockholm (Abba, Lenny Kravitz), Inferno w/bonus US disc Averno was produced by Entombed and Per Gunnerfeldt (best known for his work with The Hives, (Int) Noise Conspiracy). The album finds Entombed in unmistakable raw form and features some of their best material to date. Released in Europe during 2003, Inferno w/Averno's US release is an impressive 2cd package that features a wealth of extra material and enhancements not available on the European export. With fall US touring plans already in the works, it is going to be a widely exposed album and year-long priority.

No Palooza

The 2004 edition of the Lollapalooza tour has been abruptly cancelled due to poor ticket sales, according to the event's official web site. "This morning (June 22), tour organizers and concert promoters, faced with several million dollars of losses, made the very tough decision to pull the tour," the site says.

"My heart aches along with the bands, and all of our employees, whose hard work developed one of the most exciting and important tours that this nation was to see," says Lollapalooza co-founder Perry Farrell. "My heart is broken."

Adds booking agent/tour co-founder Marc Geiger, "I am in utter disbelief that a concert of this stature, with the most exciting line-up I've seen in years did not galvanize ticket sales. I'm surprised that given the great bands and the reduced ticket prices that we didn't have enough sales to sustain the tour. Concert promoters across the country are facing similar problems. Many summer tours are experiencing weak ticket sales."

Owen Explains

CANNIBAL CORPSE guitarist Jack Owen has issued the following statement regarding his decision to leave the group:

"After 15 years with CANNIBAL CORPSE, I've decided to leave the group. My heart just wasn't in it anymore, and it was reflected in my appearance on stage. Times change, and I just don't enjoy the music as much as I used to, and the only thing keeping me in the band was steady work, and the pay. These things makes it unfair to myself, my band members, and especially the fans.

"I'd like to thank all the members of CANNIBAL CORPSE, past and present, for sharing in the conquest of an entire genre of music. I wish the band continued success... I would especially like to thank the fans for being there for 15 years. Without you, I wouldn't have made it this far. Your dedication to death metal is unbelievable.

"I am going to continue in music, of course, with ADRIFT. I'd like to thank them for their patience and understanding, and support of my decision. We will meet again, I'm sure."

Flynn Comments

MACHINE HEAD frontman Robert Flynn has slammed ARCH ENEMY for "lying" about the reasons for their cancellation of their participation in the MH-headlined "Weapons of Mass Destruction" U.S. tour. Speaking to Cleveland, Ohio's The Metal Show Sunday night (May 2), Flynn said about the trek, "It's been killer, man. The tour's been great. I think we've got a really strong package. We've got GOD FORBID and 36 CRAZYFISTS. ARCH ENEMY — it's unfortunate that they've decided to do things the way that they have. They kind of made up a bunch of excuses about going out, you know, because [ARCH ENEMY singer Angela Gossow] couldn't get her visa...you know, whatever. If you buy that, I've got a bridge in Brooklyn I can sell you too. The thing is that they needed this tour more than we needed them, you know. No one's asked for their money back, so...it's unfortunate that they had to go the whole lying route, but whatever. No one's hurting from it."

In the same interview, Flynn was asked about a statement from one of his older interviews in which he was quoted as saying that he didn't understand how an "an incredibly average band" like GODSMACK could go on to sell millions while a band like MACHINE HEAD retained a largely underground cult status. Asked if he's surprised that GODSMACK "continue to sell and that the world hasn't caught on to MACHINE HEAD yet," Flynn replied, "I can...I can definitely see why they sell as many records as they do. They write a lot more commercially ready, radio-friendly music, and we've taken a different path. Especially with this record. Again, it's an extremely unconventional record. Radio stations, especially mainstream ones, pretty much loathe to play seven-minute songs. I mean, on some of them the vocals don't kick in for three minutes and go into all kinds of changes. With all due respect, they're writing three minute songs that are pretty simple kinds of things. I still stand by those comments. They're not the worst band in the world, but I don't get it."

Flynn's entire interview with "The Metal Show" can be heard online at this location.

If Dime Meets Phil...

DAMAGEPLAN guitarist Dimebag Darrell was recently asked by Belgium's Concreteweb.be what might happen if he were to run into his former PANTERA bandmate, SUPERJOINT RITUAL singer Philip Anselmo, at a festival somewhere. "What will I do? I don't fear that day ever!" Dimebag replied. "I just get on with my business, and do my fucking thing, you know! But the dude obviously has nothing to say to me! We tried to get in touch with him a million times, and he hasn't spoken to us in two and a half years! So, it won't bother me, man! Because we're just gonna get on about what we're doing, you know! I've got my new band, man, and I've got some…fuck him! I've got a new family and everything! I'm real proud of what we’ve got, and I'll be happy to get out and stomp some fuckin' ass, you know?"

With regards to whether DAMAGEPLAN will continue the PANTERA tradition of having a lot of booze on the table in their dressing room and on the tour bus, Dimebag said, "Hell yeah! We drink! Hell yea, we drink and rise hell! But it won't affect the performance! We get up and throw it up, you know! We just did an interview with another guy from Belgium who told us that last time he came through there, Phil was drunk, laying around, just didn't get the job done, and a lot of fans felt cheated. Well, that won't be the case with DAMAGEPLAN!"

Perfect Kingdom

"After the breakup of Nothingface I began putting together members to form what I thought was going to be Perfect Enemy, which has been a side project of mine for a long time. As I’ve brought more people into the band it has begun to turn into something a little different, so I decided to change the name as well. Perfect Enemy was always the name of my side project, and this is definitely my full time band now. The name of this band is now KINGDOM OF SNAKES, a web site is being built right now (www.kingdom-of-snakes.com) which will have additional info and other stuff. After bringing in Matt Holt as a singer and guitar player, I began solidifying the lineup with the addition of Jason Blackmore on guitar and vocals. Jason has spent the last few years in Gunfighter and Molly Mcguire and has been a friend of ours for years. We’ve added Jason Gerken on drums, also from Molly Mcguire, Gunfighter and recently with Steve Burns. Rehearsals have begun and we are recording a 5 song E.P. in May with Bill Kennedy (Nothingface, Nine Inch Nails). Check the website for regular updates. Bill Gaal"

Further Seems Forever Acquires New Singer

From the band:

"After much thought and receiving countless e-mails of support and encouragement from our fans, we (Josh, Chad, Steve and Derick) have decided to continue writing and performing music as Further Seems Forever. We had previously announced our certain disbandment to start a new project but changed our minds when an exciting possibility arose. We began talking to a singer who we greatly admired and after many phone conversations and meeting him face to face to play music, we have decided to continue as Further Seems Forever.

We are extremely excited to announce that Jon Bunch, formerly the vocalist for the veteran rock group Sense Field, will be taking over vocal duties for Further Seems Forever. We can't tell you how honored we are to have a singer of this quality to make music and inspire people along with us. We have been fans of Sense Field's music for a long time and are overjoyed to find out that Jon is not only a great singer and lyricist, but also an even greater person. Jon will be doing vocals for our up-coming album to be released this summer on Tooth and Nail Records. We will be touring and functioning as a working group once again. We appreciate the support of everyone who has stood by us through these recent events and look forward to being back bigger and better than ever. Stay tuned to our website for exciting news and tour dates."

"It's gonna cause a big stir in the music business, period, because it's basically a video about us destroying a record store, and all this different verbiage comes up talking about how really corrupt the music industry is," KORN singer Jonathan Davis told MTV.com about the clip. "We're just asking for it with this video, and it's pretty amazing. We're really excited about it."

As previously reported, KORN will be supporting LINKIN PARK on their Projekt Revolution Tour, which begins July 23 and wraps up on Sept. 6. Also appearing will be rapper SNOOP DOGG.

NIN Outlook

NINE INCH NAILS mastermind Trent Reznor has spoken to Rolling Stone magazine about the group's upcoming fourth album, "Bleed Through", which is currently being recorded in Los Angeles.

"It's more song-oriented [than 1999's 'The Fragile']," Reznor said of the album which he hopes to complete by the summer for a late 2004 release. "It's much more lean. It's going to be twelve good punches in the face — no fillers, no instrumentals, just straight to the point.

"It's a complicated concept record," Reznor added, "but reduced to just simple songs. It's not epic in its scope. It's minimal and a bit brutal."

NIN plan to hit the road in the next few months to preview the new material. "It's been forever since we played," Reznor said. "I'm re-energized right now, my life's in order, and I'm ready to combat the shitty music that's out right now."

Cannibal Corpse Side Project

ADRIFT, the hard rock side project of CANNIBAL CORPSE guitarist Jack Owen, have completed work on their debut EP at Audiohammer Studios in Sanford, Florida (GOD FORBID, MONSTROSITY, TRIVIUM) with CAPHARNAUM leader Jason Suecof at the board. Co-produced by Suecof and ADRIFT, the EP "showcases ADRIFT's unique sound and approach to accessible songwriting," according to a posting on the band's web site. Mastering took place at world-renowned Morrisound Studios with Jim Morris finalizing the signature ADRIFT sound. Three songs from the EP — "Empty Dreams", "Broken Mirror" and "Fear of Day" — are currently available for streaming or for download via www.adrift.cc

ADRIFT, whose lineup is completed by ex-EPITAPH/RESURRECTION drummer Kevin Astl, Mark Elm on vocals, Analia Pizzaro on guitar, and Michael Capuano on bass guitar, will be filming a video for the song "Empty Dreams" in the next couple of weeks and will be posting it to their web site by April 1.

Commented Astl, "I think the ADRIFT songs are going to catch a lot of people by surprise. If you're looking for a rehash of 'Hammer Smashed Face', you won't find it. If, however, you are looking for well-written, aggressive songs you can identify with, along with a heavy, grooving sound unlike any mainstream band, ADRIFT may offer you what you are looking for — a pleasurably introspective listening experience. Hell, it just rocks, and we have a blast playing it! Check it out and make your own opinion."

Slipknot Set Date

SLIPKNOT have set a May 25 release date through Roadrunner Records for their much-anticipated, as-yet-untitled follow-up to 2001's "Iowa".

A variety of Jägermeister-sponsored bands will assume the fourth spot on the bill.

Commented drummer Joey Jordison, "We're back and it's been far too long. On the tour we are ready to get completely back to basics of delivering unbridled brutality your way. This is for the maggots that have stood by us...prepare!"

As previously reported, a brand new SLIPKNOT track, entitled "Don't Get Close", will be featured in an upcoming Activision videogame, tentatively due in April. A slightly reworked version of the song is expected to appear on the upcoming CD, which is currently being recorded with producer Rick Rubin (SYSTEM OF A DOWN, SLAYER, AUDIOSLAVE).
