Chino Moreno

Chino Moreno's real name is Camillo Wong Moreno. The name appears in the CD inside covers. I've always thought that was Chino's sister or something, but apparently that's his real name. Chino is his nickname, and it means "Chinese" in Spanish. He is half Chinese and half Mexican.

Chino was born in 1973. His dad is Hispanic and his mom is Chinese/Irish/Native American/Hispanic. He was the 2nd of 5 kids. He is married, and his wife's name is Celeste. They have 2 sons: Kristian and Jakobi. I think Kristian appears in the 7 Words video; I'm not sure. Click here for an in-depth story of Chino's whole life.

"My lyrics don't deal with specific topics, I write down on paper the feelings of the moment, it's no easy to explain the contents of the lyrics or give a logical sense to the words. What I write is also a reaction to the music we make, so the deftones' sound is not pop, it doesn't communicate happy feelings. Paradoxically my favorite songs of the album talk about love, in a clearly different view."

"The new wave influence to me, bands like the Cure and Depeche Mode, stuff that blew my mind when I was young, stuck in me and those were the people who taught me how to sing. I think all the covers we've been doing lately... we've done a Smiths cover, we've done a Duran Duran cover, a Depeche Mode cover. Luckily, it's cool because that was me growing up and everybody just went with it, you know what I'm saying, which is cool." - Chino
