April 16, 1998 - Charlotte, NC
by Patrick Elliot - xcoolguyx@juno.com Hey wuz up everyone! I'm just recovering from the Deftones show yesterday 4/16 in Charlotte NC at Tremont Music Hall. Since I'm kinda new to the Deftones and I don't know many of their songs I can't quite give you a playlist, and I couldn't get my hands on one, but some guy paid 40 bucks for a playlist. $40! Man, that guy's got money to burn. Anyways, as everyone probably knows, Tinfed opened for them. I don't want to be too critical, but DAMN they sucked! The guitarist didn't change chords once the whole set. I started thinking that I could probably go up there and sound better than him. The bassist and drummer were pretty good and stuff. Unfortunately, the singer didn't have too much energy. Maybe I just expected too much from him and I thought that he'd have the same intensity that Chino has, but all he did was dance in the same place and sing cock-rock. Maybe it's just that Tin fed doesn't play stuff that's as hard and rockin as the Deftones so I guess it's just that Tin fed doesn't belong opening for the Deftones, they don't really click. Let's just skip all this and get to the good stuff. Of course, the Deftones just kicked ass! I was right up front as much as I could, but I had to leave every once in a while just to cool off. Damn, It's so fuckin hot in Tremont! They've got like absolutely no air circulation in that place. I wouldn't be surprised if it was 110 degrees in there. So, Chino and the rest just tore the fucken place down! Even though a lot of people hung out outside because of the heat or the smell of B.O., I don't know, and some people sat, ( can you believe it SITTING at a Deftones show?! ), the rest of us that actually went there to have a good time were moshin and shit. Chino only stage-dived once so that was disappointing especially because that was when I was outside cooling off for a second. Anyways, they were still awesome even though I'm sure that their other concerts were better than this one, probably because Tremont isn't that great of a place for a concert even though they get all of the best bands to play there. Also, I didn't get to see Chino come out and talk to the crowd becase I had to leave a bit after the show ended, even though I don't know if he even came out to talk to the crowd I don't know. But for all of you out there that haven't seen a Deftones show and are thinking about it, DEFINITELY GO! Especially if you're big and can take some shoving and stuff ( I'm not too big, I'm 5'9", 150 lbs. ) because it can get a bit rough and stuff but it's not that bad not anything that anybody can't handle. It's definitely a great experience! |
