April 26, 1998 Deftones & Tinfed @ Cabaret Music Hall, Montreal, QC

Deftones RIPPED through Montreal with Tinfed. First off, I'd just like to announce that I'm a totally new person now that I've seen them live! And I'm so happy that I actually GOT IN since it was not all-ages and I'm only 5 months away from legal! Anyway, onto the show...

I won't say much about Tinfed since this is a Deftones page, but Tinfed are incredible! I totally loved their performance, in fact I bought their 3-song tape after the show. They're a perfect to open for the 'tones, got the body warmed up and ready.

OK...Deftones' set is like practically a total blur it was so fucking GOOD! (And it's hard to describe it without swearing so censure yourself!). Here's the setlist:

...And as you can see, it was one ripping song after another! Moshing started IMMEDIATELY! I was 2 people from the stage between Chino and Chi, and being the small little girl I got SQUASHED! But I loved every bit of it!!! With 'My Own Summer (Shove It)' Chino really didn't have to sing 'cause everyone else was doing it for him, it was just so cool! Imagine this: sold out, SMALL CLUB VENUE, completely packed to the roof (safe place was the balcony!)....it was just so damn cool to have been there. Local band Slaves On Dope were right behind me--they're HUGE Deftones fans, everyone listen! You should check out the Slaves if you can [plug!plug!]. 'Lotion' is my favorite song of the latest album, and I couldn't believe it was 2nd up. 'Root' was amazing, 'Nosebleed' was amazine...DAMN IT!!!! EVERY SONG WAS AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!! Chino kept hovering over the crowd, jumping on the crowd, grabbing the crowd....and everytime Chino came to the front (there's no barrier) EVERYONE would try to reach for him so I ended up being clobbered and Chino looking right at me. It was kinda funny though, 'cause I was laughing. They just kept on belting one kick ass rocking tune after the other and eventually the floor got a bit unberable so I ended up being pulled behind the Slaves and finally I gave up and went to the balcony to take some pictures. I went to the show alone so my mom didn't want me coming home with more than the usually bruises and the trouble breathing. But that place is so small.....I stood on the balcony on Chi's side of the stage and got such a wicked view! My camera's a bitch and it actually worked! Most of them are just of Chino and Stephan, with maybe 3 with Chi's head at his mic, and ONE with a clear shot of Abe's shadow on the wall (the scanner didn't pick it up though). Chi put his bass down and ran out into I mean onto the crowd. Like he SWAN DIVED! He had this big ass smile on his face too. (and my film wasn't wound properly so those didn't get taken).

So they played all the good stuff! They did 'Mascara'! The only slow song, and that ain't saying much...They did 'Fireal'!!!!! it was so good! Everyone was chanting for 'Wicked' but Chino's like "we have a few of our own songs to do!" He's so very crowd orientated. I'm glad they played 'Teething' 'cause I never heard it before. 'Head Up' was amazing! I took a picture of the crowd (the fury below) and I even got Chino crowd surfing and being dragged back on stage (nice boxers!) Ending off with 'Enging No. 9' was just asking for more but they didn't come back after that (well I think before 'Head Up' Chino took a break while the guys were playing distortion and feedback...very trippy...) All in all, 15 on fucking 10 man!!!!! It was the best concert I had ever been to in my whole life, and I've only been going to concerts for little over a year now.

After the show I went back to the floor to try and meet them, but mostly to thank the singer from Slaves On Dope because he protected me in the mosh pit. And I talked with them and stuff, we all wanted to meet Deftones but I had to go home because I had an exam at 8am (and I got 80%!) BUT Stephen came on stage and started handing out picks...of course a zillion guys jumped the front! My hand snuck through while I got practically clobbered and he had only 2 or 3 left, and he saw me and gave me one! It's black and his signature's on the back and on the front it says "Satan Rules!" with the star in the circle! I'm gonna drill a hole in it and put it around my neck!!!!! I never ever got anything like that in my whole life!

So....that's it that all! Can't wait 'til the Vans Warped Tour!!!!!!! I'm going just for them. (...and for Pennywise...and Frenzal Rhomb)
