June 30, 2000 - Minneapolis, MN @ Quest by Stuart - smlewis@charter.net After going to the Chili Peppers / Foo Fighters concert in March, this concert was much more enjoyable than the Target Center. The Quest is a nightclub located west of the Nicollet Mall in a part of Minneapolis surrounded by bars and well-known restaurants and nightclubs. My parents dropped myself and two friends off a 5:40 where a crowd a block long was waiting for us. After seeing a kid that we knew in middle school (a real dumbass), we finally made it in around 6:20. The inside of The Quest is a large room that's surrounded on either side with parallel bars and pillars that narrow towards the stage. There's also a second floor that's divided down the middle where they were serving alcohol. After grabbing some sodas we made our way to the front without any trouble. Glassjaw fuckin ruled. Their performance was nothing less than outstandinig for an opening band. The Deftones knew what they were doing when they decided to tour with them back in May. The moshing wasn't too bad except for this one guy who looked like he was on speed. Once Glassjaw finished, the crowd literally became wall to wall. The crowd began swaying and slowly things got out of control. I didn't think it was that big a deal until The Deftones came out. They opened with Be Quiet & Drive which didn't sound all that good but nonetheless was awesome. Just seeing the band so close(fifteen feet)was amazing in itself. During My Own Summer, I lost my shoe and within a matter of seconds my foot was trampled. I retreated to the back of the floor and eventually moved forward again around the time Bored started. I found one of my friends off to the left where we had a perfect view of Steph, Chino, and Chi Cheng. I stayed there for the remainder of the concert. Hmm.... memorable things - The performances of Damone, Bored, 7 Words, Root, Mascara..... Chino kneeling by the people in front.... Steph holding a cigarette under his guitar strings...Chino picking up and throwing a hat behind him after saying, "Fred Durst, you lost your hat..." Chi Cheng throwing a towel that was on his head at one of the security guys...Chino asking the people on the second floor if anyone had thrown acid at him...quote: "Anyone up there throw acid at me? I can taste it on my tongue. I guess we'll know in about an hour..." And finally, Abe Cunningham jumping and leaning against the side wall of the stage and smiling towards the end... I guess that's about it. Afterwards, I tried to find my shoe to no avail. Instead a found a really nice Etienes Mike Vallely signature shoe.
Here's the setlist to the best of my memory (6 days later): There's probably a few I left out.
