July 14th 2001 - Portland OR Ok, the truth is, I came only to see Deftones. System of a Down was there, and some new acts like Puddle of Mudd, Stereomud, From Zero (they sucked), and Godsmack. I saw Deftones a year earlier and totaly made me a fan. They started with Be Quiet and Drive, then after the heavy part slammed right into My Own Summer. It was cool, I was right in front getting my ass kicked, but it was worth it. Then Chino was sitting up above the crowd and sings the Gorillaz song "Clint Eastwood" and slurring his speech, (you could totaly tell he was drunk) and then they played Change, and Chino played a sweet ass Gibson SG with a wood body, and it was just killer mood during the song. I didn't see Frank Delgado (the DJ) during the intro, I think he was out during this tour. After Change, they played 7 Words, it was cool, during the first verse Chino came into the crowd on the gate and sang. Then one of the idiotic crowd surfers stole his hat, and pissed Chino off, these were his exact words "Hey, hey! Gimmie that back man. Damn, didn't yo mother ever tell you not to take things that werent yours?" then they slammed back into the song. And just before the heavy part they stopped the song, and brought out CKY, the band who made MTV's Jackass theme song, then chino says "Hey one rule, dont suck, alright?" and they played that song, then Deftones came back out and finished the song. Then chino picked up someones shirt that had been thrown on stage, and he put it on, and said "Hey thanks, when i was growin up we barley had enough money for shoes, thanks folks" and then more people threw clothing on stage, so Chi picked it up and put on a womans shirt, a tennis shoe then Chi said "Hey, can someone throw me a size 10 and a half?" then someone threw a Birkinstock up there, and he put that on. Then Deftones ended with Engine no9. That was their set, it was the coolest, they get better every time.
