July 17, 1998 - Milwaukee County Stadium
by TJ - tanderso@kcc.com We showed up at Milwaukee county stadium at 2:00. Little did we know that Deftones were scheduled for 3:30. We came close to missing them! I wasn't all that excited about any of the other bands. Snapcase was the only band that turned my head. They were actually very good. The lead singer said "Stick around for the Deftones" which was cool. I'll have to say one thing, H2O could possibly be the worst band I have ever seen at a festival. Not only did their music suck, but the guitarist kept babbling on and on between songs. It seemed like they played forever too (Deftones were playing right after them). By the middle of H2O's set, the stage that the Deftones would be playing at was packed. They really had the biggest crowd of any band I saw play that day. When the Deftones started, the stadium parking turned into a beautiful pit of body upon body. I made my way to the front while they opened with "Head Up". They played it perfectly. Chino wasn't moving around too much, but every movement he made showed how much emotion he was putting into the song. Abe is one of the most exciting drummers I have ever seen play. It looked like he was ready to kill somebody when he broke a stick over his thigh and threw it into the crowd. He then went into "Around the Fur" which pretty much kicked my ass. Stephen was real into it. There set was something like this:
All in all, I wish they played longer. It was fuckin great though. They are the second best band I have ever seen live (second to TOOL). I hope they come back soon. |
