deftones
August 5, 1999 - San Francisco, CA - Slims

First off, I want to let the "fan" in version A know that if you a part of the working class and you consider yourself a real deftones fan, you would've got to the show early enough no matter what it took. And, it is true that a big percentage of those who actually got in, were teenagers, but my friends and I aren't. I took a cab from the financial district (work) and arrived around 3 pm. I hooked up with my friend Justin and we chilled for awhile. The fat chick pretty much screwed over all of us that showed up early. She was herding us around like a bunch of cattle and kept telling us to go to this corner, then the other corner. She told everyone hanging out in front of the mexican restaurant to get across the street. So, we listened to her and then she just let people line up in a random chaos.

Around 5:30, they started putting wristbands on everyone and some dork in a yellow shirt came up to us, telling us about how he saw my friend during the Slipknot show at Ozzfest and the next thing you know, his friends jacked in line right in front of us. Luckily, we made it in by like 20 people. There were hella people still in line after they were done passing out the wrist bands and the Slims staff was telling them to go home, but I guess they figured that they could get in if they stuck around. So, the line didn't even move until 7:15 or so and it was freakin freezing outside!!

Papa Roach didn't come on until 8:30 and they were pretty cool. I was impressed with their stage presence. The lead singer was really into the crowd and the base player was hella into his guitar. They played till about 9:15. Then Deftones came out at 10 and Chino came out playing the guitar. His strap broke towards the end of the song and he threw the guitar out into the crowd. It was freakin awesome! Chi's dreads are getting hella long and he was just flinging them all over the place. There is nothing like seeing a great band in a small club. Slims is a pretty cool place to check out bands! I saw Incubus there and it's a totally different atmosphere than seeing a band in a large venue, like Ozzfest at Shoreline.

I was three people back from left/center stage and being that I am only 5'4", I had to get out of there about half way through the show. Some big hairy guy was flinging his arms all over those of us in the front. The whole front of the crowd was just one big pit. It was great. Well, those of you not lucky to make it in to the free show, missed a great show! PS...They didn't give out 500 braclets, as the max capacity was only 460. I'll bet they only gave out about 300 of them. Live 105 was only concerned about promoting themselves and they used Deftones fans to do it. But, I'll put up with waiting in line for hours to see the Deftones anytime!! You should all call into Live 105 and request a Deftones song. See if they have balls enough to play real music!
