December 16, 1998 - San Francisco, CA - Maritime Hall by Louise - drudreamer@yahoo.com Alright. The night didn't start off too well. My friend and I had to take a bus all the way up to San Francisco and then walk through the Mission to get to the show, but it was so worth it. I'd seen the Deftones live once, but I was really far from the stage that time. But the Maritime Hall is hella little, so no matter where you're standing you're close. Skinlab went on first. I can take them or leave them, they were basically your run-of-the-mill pissed off metal band where you can't understand a word they're saying. The lead singer kept yelling 'Where are my homies?'. Quicksand was next. I'd never heard them, but I liked them. They were better than Skinlab, anyway. Sort of Jane's Addiction-y. The singer also kinda looked like my Spanish teacher, but anyway, then, finally, it was time for the Deftones. During the setup, I worked my way to the front till I was about three people away from the stage. Then all the lights went out. This eerie suspense music started up and everyone cheered. But it just kept playing, no Deftones, for what seemed like forever. I guess it was to get the crowd excited but that was pointless. Everyone was extremely puped up already. Some guy next to me started yelling 'Chi-no! Chi-no!' and other people started doing it and then Chino came running out. Of course, the place erupted. I stayed in front for the first song and then went back to the middle of the floor for the rest. They played, in no particular order: My Own Summer (shove it), Be Quiet And Drive, Mascara (very angry version of it), Engine No. 9, 7Words, Birthmark, MX, Dai the Flu, Around the Fur, Bored, Lotion They ended with Headup, which is one of my favorites, and after that a slower song I din't recognize. About twenty-five people got kicked out for crowdsurfing or whatever, and Chino told the audience to respect the security and they'll respect you. He also warned the guy with the laser light to stop already because it was getting old. It ws, too. He'd been bouncing that damn light around the stage since before the show even started. All in all, it was an awesome show.
