December 18, 1998 - Sacramento, CA - Memorial Auditorium by John Stafford - astafford@prodigy.net The Show started at 7:00. With Quicksand opening. Their guitar's were turned up to loud and the lead singer/guitarist was singing in the mic so you couldn't here any of their lyrics. Abe and Stef were video taping quicksand from the sides of stage while they played. I never got into them because that was the first time I have heard them. They were alright. The crowd seemd to like them. I was about 2 to 3 people back from the front right smack in the middle. After quicksand was over Mix Master Mike came on. I was wrong with Snapcase playing and Molotov, they stopped playing sometime earlier during the tour. Anyway Mix Master Mike is a great DJ but it just didn't fit this show. Everyone got hellah bored, and his friends video taping him and would occasionally film the crowd. During that time most people were flipping off the camera. He Should have had some dancers or something, it just him up there on his two turntables saying "Now lets hear some drums" or "Let's hear some guitars" which didn't even sound like it. Anyway after he was gone, the lights went black and the deftones were next. They played an intro to excite up the crowd, similiar to the style and sound that metallica uses with their intro. Then they kicked it off with Lotion. Yep Lotion. Chino jumped right into the front row were I was with all my friends. And when he started singing the chorus of "I feel sick", he looked right at me and brought the mic to me and let me sing that part. That was the best deftones moment I had. I forget the next songs but getting towards that end they played 7 words and Chino jumped up on top speakers to the left of the stage. During the part when he says " squeal like a pig..." he jumped into the crowd. probable about a 15 foot drop. The Deftones also played To have and to hold by Depeche Mode, I think. It was hard to here the lyrics but it was a slow song during that song the bass playerfrom quicksand replaced Chi. Then at the last song Headup the two roadies( the overweight guys that were black) and Chi's brother-John all got mics and sang with Chino. That was way cool and the whole band was having a good time like they were playing in front of their hometown. Then they thanks Sacramento for supporting them. The setlist was Bored, Nosebleed(I think), 7 words, Engine No. 9 with Wicked verse, My own summer, mascera, lotion, headup, mx, around the fur, be quiet and drive(I think they played the acoustic version to), I can't remember the whole, I got into the mosh pit during the middle of the show. For some reason I think they played Root and Damone but I don't know. Anyway they played a long time it seemed. This show was so goof I'd follow these guys show to show like the dead-heads of the Grateful Dead and call myself a Def-head, but I don't have the money. -John
