"I thought it would be fun to throw fans of both our bands for a loop,
by having them hear my voice but not be absolutely sure it was me," he
says. "I told them to put ‘Pony Wong,’ since Wong is my real middle name.
It was just a silly little misunderstanding that grew out of proportion and
got us a lot of free publicity. My band got a great kick out of it."
With Deftones working like crazy on new material and set to begin
recording their third Maverick album October 20 at The Plant in Sausalito,
CA, there had also been intense speculation around who the band would hire
to co-produce. Big names like Rick Rubin and Bob Marlette were bandied
about, but Moreno recently announced that Terry Date - - who co-produced
with Deftones on their now certified Gold albums Adrenaline and Around The
Fur -- was the best choice for the new project.
"We talked to a lot of people along the way, but in the end felt that
he’s still the right guy for us," says Moreno. Moreno won’t divulge
specifics about the new project (which is set to be released in early
Spring, 2000), but its working title shows that Deftones definitely have a
sense of humor. "The whole rumor thing made the title ‘The White Pony’ an
obvious choice," he says. "We’re still deep in the writing and pre-
production phase, but we can say that it’s going to be very moody. We’ve
been watching a lot of youth oriented movies like ‘The Outsiders’ lately,
and that’s having an influence on us."
"It's taken a while becauese everyone's so picky," adds vocalist chino moreno. "we're trying to get
a cool electronic vibe but keep the sound totally analouge: kinda warm and soothing, with more
spacey sounds. theres alot more of Frank (delagado, deftones DJ) on there, and he's using
turntables in ways you wouldn't expect. There are also more dynamic extremes - in the way that say,
Janes Addictions songs lift you up, turn you around and take you somewhere new."
Also, radio stations around the country are send remixes for My Own Summer, call them up and request them! The list of radio stations is shown below:
Moreno's co-credit involves a special female as well, as the song he and the band penned is about the ultimate
unattainable woman. Witherspoon(Sevendust vocalist) describes trying and failing to reach her, while Moreno
urges him to give up the race. The two trade off on verses, but share the chorus. "[Moreno's] voice is so sweet,
he gets so much melody in it," Witherspoon says. "I really like having this melody behind the heavy,
hard-driving guitars. Kids in the pit need something to sing to."
Mad props to Sacto, CA and John P. for the news.

Deftones Offer Reward on Recovering Equipment
The Deftones are still looking for all their stuff. Here's the lowdown:
Maverick Recording artists, Deftones, experienced just that this
past Valentine's Day after a show with Black Sabbath. The
band's truck, chock full 'o gear including several of Chi Cheng's
Precision Fender basses, and Stephen Carpenter's custom
guitars and racks, was stolen during the night from a Holiday Inn
parking lot in Dearborn, Michigan. With some help from Black
Sabbath and Pantera, Deftones were able to rejoin the tour a
couple nights later.
Please put the word on the street, and help Deftone's get some
gear back. The band is offering a reward for information that
leads to the recovery of lost items. If you have any information,
please email deftones@maverickrc.com, or call 323-937-1931.

Chino To appear on Sabbath Man's all-star solo LP
This from The Ultimate Deftones Page:
Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi has revealed this week that his new solo album will include Chino Moreno.
Iommi plans to complete work on the as yet untitled album after Sabbath's current US tour. He aims to have it released by the summer.
I've got a lot of tracks written," he says "only two tracks have proper drums on them so far, but it won't take long to get things finished. All the writings done, although i've found that when different singers come in, we end up rewriting stuff".
One such example might well be Chino Moreno, who spoke candidly of his collabiration with Iommi: "Tony sent the song to me and
I've already written a melody to it, but there's one riff in it that I hate!" The singer confesses. "If Stephen (Carpenter, Deftones guitarist) were to come to me with that riff I'd spit on him! No, I'm just
kidding - it just sounds a bit cheesy, but the rest of it's really good."
Despite the fact that Deftones have been touring with Black Sabbath for the past fortnight, Chino admits: "I haven't talked to Tony
about the song yet, but I want to ask him if I can take that one part out. I'm kind of nervous about asking him.
Like, 'Tony that riff sucks!'. I'm scared to tell him that incase he punches me or something!"
Other artists to feature on Iommi's solo album include: Skunk Anansie singer Skin, Billy Corgan(who sings and plays bass on two
tracks), Pantera's Phil Anselmo and Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst.

More on Stolen Equipment
The Deftones are the latest victims of what seems to be
new trend in the music industry: truck theft. The band
lost all of their equipment on Valentine's Day when
their truck was stolen from a Holiday Inn parking lot
in Dearborn, Mich.
Gone are all of the band's backline equipment and
instruments, including irreplaceable Fender Precision
bass guitars belonging to bassist Chi Cheng and several
custom-made guitars belonging to guitarist Stephen
Carpenter. The band, who are currently on tour with
Black Sabbath and Pantera, had to cancel the first of
two shows in Detroit, but with the help of their tour
mates, were able to round up enough borrowed equipment
to perform on Monday (Feb. 15).
The Deftones can only hope their truck does not meet
the same fate as that of Fear Factory and System of a
Down, whose truck was stolen in Philadelphia in January
and later found trashed near the New Jersey/ Pennsylvania
border.
The Deftones are offering a reward for any information
on the theft and the whereabouts of the equipment
involved.

End of the Tour
This is from Incubus323@aol.com:
Feb. 14 - the Deftones didn't play and Pantera just played longer.
Feb. 15 - Deftones did play, but they had a limited set up: Steph only had 2 marshall stacks, and Abe didn't have his Orange County. They didn't sound that good, but they played a good show, they said it was the last one that they were playing before they went in to record the new cd.
2/17/99
Stolen Equipment
It's confirmed. Deftones equipment was stolen in Flint, MI on Saturday night.
2/16/99

tracks from 311, Rage Against the Machine's Zack de la
Rocha, Moby, Vision of Disorder, and
Snapcase. No Doubt, who have covered Bad Brains in the

unclear. Other bands who have been approached include

Side Project
Chino Moreno, the lead screecher for the hard-rocking Deftones, has long
said he has a weakness for soft, tender music. Now, he's going to prove it with Team Sleep, a
side project that he says won't necessarily appeal to fans of the Deftones' aggressive, edgy
metal attack.
"Fans who are really into what the Deftones do might dig it, but people looking for shit to get
crazy to won't," he tells Wall of Sound. "It's real sleepy, organic, ambient shit—strummy guitars
and soft vocals with beats."
Moreno says he was inspired to get the project off the ground after recording an acoustic remix
of the Deftones" "Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away)" with two fellow Sacramento musicians, the
for-hire hip-hop DJ Crook and Jonah Matranga of the band Far. "It got large all overseas,"
Moreno says of the remix. "I realized how sick it was and decided I wanted to do more of it."
Moreno, who is joined in Team Sleep by his guitar-playing childhood friend Todd Wilkinson and
DJ Crook, says one song already has been recorded by the group, whose reference points
include Pornography-era Cure, Massive Attack, and even Jane's Addiction. He expects to
complete five more between Sept. 21 and Nov. 7, when the Deftones take a break, during
which time bassist Chi Cheng will undergo foot surgery and drummer Abe Cunningham's wife
is due to have a baby.
"I get to do my thing, and it doesn't get in the way of what the Deftones are doing," he says of
the project. "I want to keep it on a real underground level for now. I'm just going to give away
tapes to people who want it." —Josh Freedom du Lac

Deftones' Chino Moreno Takes a Concert Nosedive
You can't pick your fans, and you can't pick your fans' noses… But, as Deftones frontman Chino Morena learned last Saturday during a show at Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre in Irvine, Calif., occasionally, if the timing's right, a fan can pick your nose. It seems when Moreno dove headfirst into the crowd during the band's performance of its hard-driving song "Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away)," from the Around the Fur album, an audience member's finger somehow got lodged up inside of Moreno's nose. After being returned to the stage by the accommodating crowd, he swabbed at his bleeding proboscis with a towel and completed the song, before launching into the final number of the set, the appropriate "Headup." "In all the years that I’ve been diving into crowds, no one has ever stuck their finger so far up my nose that they touched my brain," Moreno later quipped.
8/23/98

Chino Interview
i just finished watching an interview on this local tv show with chino, and he was talking about lots of stuff. one thing, the next video the deftones will do is "around the fur". chino said it will be kinda like "smack my bitch up" by prodigy. he said he personally did not like the "be quiet and drive" video since it was totally driven by the record company, and he said that he will take total control w/ the video and screw MTV if they play it or not. he also said the the "my own summer" video was really expensive since he had to get footage of sharks from australia and all that.
as for the future, chino thinks the deftones will start recording for a new album the beginning of 1999. he will probably use terry date again plus this DJ who tours with them. the DJ is part of this 2-man band named "the co-defendents". chino said the new album will use some of those wacky sounds from the DJ. he said he might also work with fred with LB's next album. the record company (maverick) is really limiting what things chino can/can't do, he says. the deftones will also tour after the warped tour is over.
also, for those who've seen the "bored" video, remember that blue/red/white basketball they have in there? that's chino's basketball from when he was a kid. well, the ball was popped and chino was majorly bummed out. about a month ago, he bought another old-school basketball at this auction, and it's kinda like his old one.
