Wesley Willis Dies at age 40

Wesley Willis, the 6 foot 6, 350 pound, schizophrenic chicago rock legend died on Thursday (august 22) as a result of his long battle with leukemia. Willis released over 50 albums including 4 in a span of 36 days. Three of his recordings were released under Jello Biafra's label Alternative Tentacles and two by Rick Rubin's American Recordings. Willis toured with sublime and was a favorite among numerous muscicians. "Wesley will go down as one of the most unique songwriters and entertainment personalities in history," Biafra said, "He was the most courageous person I have ever known." Another album is due out in October on Alternative Tentacles.

Wildest Dreams

Iron Maiden… The name should ring bells in the ears of all metal fans. Whether you hate them or not, till this day Iron Maiden are still around in the music industry. Recording their 13th studio album “Dance Of Death”, the band seem to be sending a message that, they’re not done yet. Obviously…but why am I telling you all this? Simple…Very simple. I am just wasting some space here :)! No but really, I am here to review their latest single “Wildest Dreams”. If you are a maiden fan then you will want to stick around and read this article. If you are not a maiden fan, I suggest you read this article anyways. Think about what I have just written and take a good listen to the song. Now we all know that first impressions are the most important. As a huge maiden fan, I am going to try my best as to be the least bit biased. When I first listened to the song, I heard what seemed to be the voice of Nicko McBrain. (The drummer) counting. At first I was thrown off by this idea. Why are they having him countdown for the band to start playing on a studio album? But you know what? It grows on you. Trust me! The song starts off with a simple opening. Nothing complicated. Some nice guitar playing with bass and drums following. A good first impression? If you are satisfied with moderate guitar then yes. If you are a guitar tech freak then you will probably be thinking. “Hey…what the hell…this intro is so boring”. But anyways, you guitar technicality lovers, there is a spot in it for you. The guitar solos are quite good. Or so I think. Maybe no John Petrucci solo or no Michael Romeo solo, but the solo is a quite good solo with electricity and diversity which I will go through later. The vocals open up with the man himself. Bruce Dickenson singing with his usual high pitched vocals. No he’s no Tarja, but his voice still brings in competition for her. Anyways, the lyrics are of the high standards that maiden usually produced? One thing I have to ponder is who wrote the lyrics to this song? I am sensing Dickenson/Harris here but isn’t that usually the case? The bass playing on this track was not quite what I expected it to be. I was hoping for some more old school bass playing. For example “Aces High”. But none the less, the bassline is still good. I was just expecting something crazier. As a bassist myself, I would prefer seeing Harris back to doing more of his complex fills, rather than his modern playing style. Don’t get me wrong, his style hasn’t change much, you just sense that Steve just got tired of all these crazy fills and is aiming for a more calmer song. But I really do think that Steve does bring the funk into maiden with his mental bass fills. My comments on drumming. It’s got a very wickerman type of drumming to it. Wildest Dreams has this very constant ride in it. I am very fond of Nickos drumming and think that he has never let me down since he has been with maiden. Great job! Anyways, my overall rating for this song would be an 8 out of 10. I expected much more, that’s probably why I gave it such a low rating. You are probably thinking oh but 8 is a high rating? Not when Iron Maiden is your favourite band. A song like Aces High would get a 10 rating from me, so would a song like 2 minutes to midnight. But anyways this is a classy song and brings back the life in maiden. I can’t wait to hear this next album. I do not feel it will be on my favourite maiden albums list but it will be somewhere up there with Brave New World. But hey what do I know. The album may prove me wrong and end up being another amazing album by maiden. Now that is my full honest, non biased, fair opinion. I really do recommend any 80s metal fan to have a listen to this song. It may or may not do the trick for you. But I’m sure you’ll atleast get a kick out of the beginning of it where Nicko givest the countdown. Or atleast I believe that is Nicko counting down. Anyways enjoy the song. -The Karmisutra. Pedal to the Metal

Detroit's Forge have been hard at work promoting their new CD, Bring On The Apocalypse and have now gotten two Detroit Music Awards nominations. "Outstanding Hard Rock/Metal Artist" and the new CD is nominated for "Outstanding Rock/pop Recording." In addition to being nominated, Forge has also been selected to play the awards show. The Music Awards take place at Detroit's State Theatre on Friday, April 23.

"Loose High & Free" ready to hit the streets!

The new SECRET HEROES album "Loose, High & Free" (Rockparade Records) is finally ready to hit the streets. The band had been forced to delay the release due to legal affairs. "We worked hard to get the problem out of the way and we can say for sure it's now sorted", guitarist Ryan Heart said after the album artwork and some of the content had to be changed. The first copies of the album have just been mailed only to fans that bought it directly at the band's web headquarter at http://www.secretheroes.com. The CD label is individually numbered, the front cover features special silver color and has got the "strictly limited edition" slogan integrated into the artwork. There is no way to copy the numbers and the silver color booklet, so the album is likely to be a sought after collector's item soon. http://www.secretheroes.com
