April 5, 2001 - Spartanburg, SC - Ground Zero

by ZnevefanZ@aol.com

Me, my sister, and a friend got to Ground Zero about 5:00, with doors opening about 7:30. There were just a few people in front of us. Anyway, we finally got in, and my sister and our friend went up front, while I chilled in a barstool in back, as I was saving my energy for Soulfly. Insolence was first, and they were really good, I had only seen them on Farmclub once, and now I wanna get their cd. Next was Shuvel, who I had heard of, but hadn't heard. They were awesome! The 2 singers crowd surfed a few times, and this one time, they got the crowd to surf them all around while they sang a whole song....the first time they ( or any band that i know of ) has done that. Next, with anticipation, the crowd awaited Soulfly's entrance. The lights dimmed, the tribal opening of the primitive cd rang out. The band entered the stage....with everyone chanting "Soulfly! Soulfly! Soulfly!" Max yelled something that I couldn't understand. Then they began "Back to the Primitive" I dont remember any order or all the songs they did, but among others they did "Roots, bloody roots", "bleed- with Shuvel's singers", "Eye for an Eye", etc, etc. Awesome show, I was jumping and headbanging, all that good stuff showing respect for the koolest band in the world. Max was getting the crowd involved, getting em to sing, it was awesome. I had heard that they usually open with "Eye for an Eye" and the whole floor turns into a mega-huge pit, which didn't happen last nite, but there were a lotta pits. This show, in general was the most violent one I've been to yet, but it was all good for Soulfly. My sister, due to a stupid-ass secuirty guard ( these guards were mostly kool, except this one. ) got drove outta her front row spot, kicked in the face by a crowd surfer, knocked down, then when she was up, she got kicked in the neck. This one secuirty guard sucked ass! He dove out and friggin tackled a crowd surfer. Our friend got the only guitar pick Max handed out too, so that was kool. Afterwards, we met some of Shuvel, and also met Mikey of Soulfly. We were waiting on Max, but their tour/band manager told us he won't be signing cuz he's sick, and they almost cancelled this show. Awesome show! Can't wait to see the tribe again!
