Max Cavalera On Guest Appearances
Soulfly frontman Max Cavalera took the time recently to speak out on the
guest appearances that have occurred on both Soulfly albums stating:
"There was a conscious effort to make sure each guest's trademark comes
in, but not to change the Soulfly sound. The music was all there
already, it's Soulfly music, and you cannot change that. If it happened
that the sound changed by using these other guys, that would've hurt us
and hurt the album. It would've become this big guest album that doesn't
really have a face."
He also commented on the almost revolving door of
musicians the band has seen with the departure of quite a few members
from the group already saying:
"The rock star shit does not work for us.
Some people came into this band and didn't understand that. Soulfly
still has the hardcore, feet-on-the-ground element that has been with me
forever, and if the musicians don't have that, they can't be in
Soulfly."
The bands new effort is set for a September 26th release date
through Roadrunner Records.

New Album Related Tidbits
Max Cavalera and his band Soulfly will take a break from recording their new
LP, "Primitive," to play for Brazilian fans during the Abril Pro Rock 2000
Festival.
The group will leave its recording studio in Phoenix to take to the stage at
Centro de Convenções de Recife on Saturday, April 8.
Soulfly has been dedicating its time to the completion of its next album,
which is tentatively set for an August release. The LP will boast the
seemingly unlikely presence of Sean Lennon (son of Beatle John Lennon), who
was invited by Cavalera to compose some songs for the disc and is also
expected to appear on the new record
Tom Araya from Slayer has also put in studio time with the band on a track
called "Terrorist," and the Deftones' Chino Moreno lent vocals to the track
"Pain" with Will Haven's Grady Avenell. In the production seat is Toby
Wright, who has also worked with Korn, Alice In Chains, and Sevendust.
Since 1993, Abril Pro Rock has featured new alternative bands from Recife,
and the festival has brought underground acts such as Mundo Livre S/A and
Chico Science & Nação Zumbi to a wider audience.
The 2000 edition of Abril Pro Rock will extend beyond Recife to include bands
from all over the country, such as Plebe Rude (Brasília), Paralamas do
Sucesso, Bia Grabois, Vulgue Tostói (Rio), Shiva Las Vegas, and Andrea
Marquee (São Paulo). Soulfly will add an international touch alongside
Aterciopelados (Bogotá), and Bloco Vomit (Scotland).

Max Sues Atlanta
Soulfly frontman Max Cavalera is seeking $1,000,000 in damages from the city of Atlanta as
part of a civil rights claim filed as the result of an altercation between a city police officer and
the singer during and after a concert in early July.
According to a copy of the complaint filed by Cavalera's legal team, the frontman says he was
forced off the stage at a local venue, the Tabernacle, on July 7 after intervening between
concertgoers and security guards, whom he says were "running roughshod over fans."
Cavalera admits to "pulling one of the guards off a fan," and that display apparently brought
the ire of one particular police officer, who physically removed the singer from the stage and
then corralled him into a back room.
Cavalera's claim alleges that he was "verbally berated" by the officer, who ordered him to
return to the stage to make a public apology to the security team or be arrested. The Soulfly
singer complied with the officer's demands, and went back onstage and apologized, noting
that "Soulfly was not about violence."
The situation apparently worsened after the show, when the same officer who forced Cavalera
off the stage stopped the singer's car at gunpoint as it was attempting to leave the Tabernacle
parking lot.
The officer then handcuffed Cavalera, paraded him front of fans and the singer's five children,
and forced him to return to the venue in order to make a "proper apology" to the security
guards there.
Because Cavalera is targeting a city government for possible legal action in a federal district
court, he must first file a claim with the city outlining his complaint and what he wants as
restitution. If the city government denies the claim or doesn't respond within a set time frame,
his lawyers can then proceed with a formal lawsuit.
A spokesperson for the City of Atlanta Law Department said that the agency had "no
comment" about Cavalera's claim.

Roy Is Outta Here!
Starting on the 7/15 show, Roy is officially out of the band. Soulfly almost canceled their show in Brich Hill, NJ; but they found a replacement in the drummers of Hatebreed and Neurosis. They played out of tune and rythm. I think the breakup between Roy and the band didn't go very smooth since Soulfly's setlist said "the fuck roy gitter, logan fags show" on top. Word is that Roy will join Mystress, the band started by ex-Soulfly guitarist Logan. Also, Max said a new album would be out next year. Thanx so much to Scot, Nick, and Leigh for the news.
7.16.99
Roy Leaving?!?
Big news from MinusWeb. I'm just gonna quote him here:
It turns out
Soulfly drummer Roy will be leaving the band after this last show on there
recent tour. To join long time friend x-guitarist Logan of (machine head) &
(soulfly) in his new band along with x-LOA member Whitfield Crane. You should
watch out for this band there going to be heavy space-metal. band with heavy
soulful guitars straight from Oaktown. We don't have a clue on what label
they will be signed on but there are alot of labels wanting them so they
would not have a problem.

Metal Hammer interviews Max
Check out the newest issue of Metal Hammer for a 3-4 page interview w/ Max. In it, he discusses the departure of Logan among other issues. Logan left because he just wasn't 100% devoted to Soulfly. It was a friendly breakup. Max is also working on the next Soulfly album which deals with slavery. Also, he is interested in working with Chi of the Deftones about a side-project. Interestingly enough, it will be some reggae(sp) stuff. Bob Marley is one of Max's favorite artists.
